Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or what is commonly referred to as ADHD, is cured by Ritalin. The medicine has been very effective and hence very popular since its introduction to the world of medicines.
However, every medicine has at least some side effects even if they are ignorable.
In this case, positive effects of Ritalin are many and they are commendable too but Ritalin side effects cannot be ignored either. Sometimes adverse effects too are found with constant or prolonged usage.
Symptoms of Ritalin Overdose
Agitation, an exaggerated feeling of delight, surprising dryness of mucous membranes, sudden convulsions (may or may not be followed by coma), profuse sweating, sudden tremors, painful vomiting, irregular or rapid heartbeat, utter confusion, unbearable hallucinations, tremendous headache, enlarging of pupil of one or both of the eyes, extremely raised body temperature, state of delirium, sudden flushing, pretty high blood pressure, twitching of muscles, are some of the most common ritalin side effects.
More common side effects of Ritalin include inability to fall asleep or continue sleeping, meaningless nervousness, etc. These side effects can obviously be put in control by changing the amount of dosage and by changing the timing of the medicine.
Like not taking it before its time to sleep should help people sleep. In children, weight loss during long – term therapy, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, inability to fall asleep or continue sleeping, and unusually speedy heartbeat can be categorized as the generally found ritalin side effects.
Insomnia and nervousness are the most common adverse effects of Ritalin but are usually controllable by dropping dosage of Ritalin or omitting the drug totally in the evening or afternoon.
Other reactions include hypersensitivity (including fever, urticaria, and skin rash), weight loss during lengthened therapy, abdominal pain, cardiac arrhythmia, angina, tachycardia, anorexia, blood pressure rise or fall and pulse changes towards high or low, dyskinesia, drowsiness, headache, nausea, palpitations, or dizziness.
